Watchkeeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel
The holder of a Watchkeeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel may act as Officer in Charge of the Watch of a Fishing Vessel not more than 150 gross tonnage or 24 metres in overall length engaged on a:
- Limited Contiguous Waters Voyage; or
- Near Coastal, Class 2; or
- Sheltered Waters Voyage.
and as Master of a Fishing Vessel of not more than 15 gross tonnage or 12 metres in overall length engaged on a:
- Near Coastal, Class 2; or
- Sheltered Waters Voyage.
The Watchkeeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel certificate covers the following topics:
- Chartwork Navigation;
- Navigation Safety;
- Bridge Watch Procedures;
- Life Saving and Distress Signals;
- Pollution Prevention;
- Fishing Vessel Construction and Seaworthiness;
- Fishing Vessel Stability;
- Practical Seamanship;
- Safe Working Practices and Occupational Safety and Health;
- General Knowledge of Weather and Marine Forecasting;
- Emergencies.
An applicant for a Watchkeeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel Certificate of Competency shall be at least 18 years of age on the day on which they receive the Certificate and, after reaching 15 years of age, acquire at least 6 months of sea service performing deck duties on one or more fishing vessels of at least 6 metres in overall length.
- Marine Emergency Duties with Respect to Basic Safety (MED A1) Training Certificate;
- GMDSS Radio Operator Certificate – Marine Commercial License;
- Simulated Electronic Navigation, Limited Training Certificate;
- Marine Basic First Aid Certificate; and
- A valid Medical Certificate or a Provisional Medical Certificate.
and pass examinations:
- Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 1;
- Navigation Safety, Level 1 and Orals Preparation;
- Oral Examination on General Seamanship, after meeting all of the other requirements described above.
This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institution Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training. As such, PTIB did not review this program.
