High Voltage Safety – Operational
This course introduces students to High Voltage (HV) systems and focuses on safety when working on energized electrical equipment. Students will learn to safely engage and disengage 600 voltage equipment, recognize the dangers of electric shock when working in unsafe areas, provide assistance in determining the severity of potential exposure to High Voltage flash hazards, plan safe work practices, and the importance of proper personal protective equipment.
Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the following:
- Understand and provide work briefing requirements
- Recognize High Voltage electrical sources
- Recognize hazards created by various high-voltage electrical equipment
- Safely engage and disengage high voltage equipment
- Develop documentation for electrical equipment isolation and maintenance
- Provide first aid for electrical shock burn injuries
- State arc flash boundary and approach boundaries
- Describe workplace electrical health and safety hazards
- Explain how preseance of earth faults is indicated in a high voltage system with an earthed neutral
- Explain Star Point Earth Resistor (SPER) and how high voltage systems are normally earthed via a resistor
- Knowledge of CSA Z462-18 Workplace electrical safety with respect to arc flash safety
- Knowledge of proper use of arc flash PPE, identification of arc flash PPE and categories of arc flash PPE
- Ability to demonstrate contact release methods
