Chartwork & Pilotage Level 2
Western Maritime Institute’s Chartwork & Pilotage Level 2 course provides in-depth knowledge of the practices and theory involved in piloting a vessel, including theory of tides, effect of wind and current, as well as chart construction and projections. Students are prepared to write a Transport Canada approved exam at Western Maritime Institute at the end of the course.
Chartwork & Pilotage Level 2 is required for:
Master 150 GT, Domestic
Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal
Mate 500 GT, Domestic
Fishing Master 3
The following topics are covered:
- knowledge of principles of construction of the different types of charts and their use;
- thorough knowledge of and ability to use publications;
- thorough knowledge and the ability to use navigational charts
- ability to navigate in confined waters
- knowledge of the use of navigational aid in pilotage situations and knowledge of the Canadian system of buoyage
- keeping a Log Book and a Record of Compass Errors;
- ability to determine the ship’s position by using:
- landmarks;
- aids to navigation, including lighthouses, beacons and buoys;
- Dead reckoning, taking into account winds, tides, currents and estimated speed;
The student must be at least 18 years of age to enroll in this course.
